In 1978, Daedalus, the Journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, published a special issue of the "Limits of Scientific Inquiry". In a novel collaboration to enhance the general public's understanding of science, The New Yorker and the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation collaborated on an annual series of special sections about science. Each issue contained short, simple, vignettes by Ms. Culliton about some of the more exciting research of the year, including short articles about some of the most important senior scientists (1997), leading researchers in genetics (1998), and young researchers headed for scientific celebrity (1999). Vital Signs, conceived and edited by Barbara Culliton, is a collection of stories produced in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. It captures research highlights that have made a difference in medicine. Chapters include "Saving the Heart, A Revolution in Treating Heart Attacks;" "Heart Transplantation;" "Hemoglobin, the Story of Blood and Blood Diseases Such as Sickle Cell Anemia;” and "A Struggle for Breath, Advances in Understanding and Treating Asthma." The Association of Professors of Medicine, which publishes The American Journal of Medicine, asked Ms. Culliton to write about her extraordinary experience as a cancer patient at Johns Hopkins, where she was treated for a rare, potentially deadly cancer of the salivary gland.
